Happy ageing: A Home Based Approach to the Years of Ageing
Italy
Total grant: 986.153 euro
The HAPPY AGEING project approaches the main limitations due to chronic diseases and it controls the individual needs of safety and well-being. The main objectives of the project are: i) to prevent the set up of chronic conditions and/or manage them if present; ii) to develop a customisable system matching demand of technology by elderly with the current market supply; iii) to involve the end-user in every phase, assessing the user’s expectations and needs, assuring the acceptance of the system; iv) to stimulate business innovation and market opportunities. The system will be composed of three modules: a) a lifestyle monitor for recording the daily activities and compare them with habits of the monitored subject; b) a navigation assistant to support user’s mobility in close environment; c) a personal assistant for support in performing actions and in searching for personal objects.
The lives of many older people in Europe are injured by chronic diseases, involving diabetes and obesity, mental decline, low vision and psychological implications such as the sense of frailness. HAPPY AGEING is aimed at the development and validation of simple accessible and usable devices to improve the prevention and management of very common chronic conditions in elderly people. The success of this kind of device is strictly related to its socio- economic impact on the foreseen target market. In fact, most of the useful solutions are derived from healthcare or disability market and, thus, have not been specifically designed to support elderly users. To move a step forward it is necessary to implement a different approach, keeping in due account the technological progress in other application areas and the real users’ wishes, approaching also the theme of technology acceptance by elderly.
