Federal Ministry of Education and Research – Ref. 615
Innovative technical aids can restore or replace lost abilities or functions. Due to demographic change and an ageing population there is a growing demand for innovative technologies for rehabilitation or disabled persons which can provide independent living and inclusion in society. This is the aim of this funding programme. Furthermore it seeks to integrate knowledge and expertise from academic and industrial research into interdisciplinary networks to foster the competitiveness of Germany’s research institutions and companies. Consortia should involve partners from different sectors (technical development, medical applications, industry companies, patient and disabled person organisations).
Following the described objectives a limited number of integrated projects will be funded. Projects should be composed of 3-5 partners from scientific research, clinical application and industrial R&D able to perform interdisciplinary collaboration.
Thematic focuses of the programme are innovative technical aids in the following functional areas:
- Mobility and motor capabilities
- Sensory capabilities
- Cognitive functions
- Communication / language
- Vegetative functions/ controls
Based on this focus projects ranging from applications-oriented basic research to clinical trials in the following two main areas will be funded:
A. Neuroprosthetics
B. Assistive und restorative systems
Cross-cutting issues to be involved include:
- Security
- Effectiveness
- Financing
- Quality management
Health & Performance
Although markets in the area of innovative technical aids are limited in size, there is reasonable economic potential in these technologies. Several leading companies in these areas as well as SME are located in Germany. Especially SME undertaking research activities are dependent on collaboration with publicly funded research organisations. The funding of application-oriented research in this area aims to bring public and private researchers together in multi-disciplinary projects in order to foster relevant synergies and to strengthen the scientific and economic competitiveness of German companies.
Eligible for funding are universities, non-academic R&D institutions, institutions of public health, as well as small and medium companies (large companies are eligible only under certain conditions).
Applicants must provide sufficient experience in R&D and the ability for multi-disciplinary collaborations. Applications should be submitted by project consortia.
Projects must provide original research approaches with high risk profile in between basic research and market-oriented development.
Applicants should also evaluate the possibility to apply for (additional) funding out of the European Framework programme
Funding is provided for projects as non-reimbursed payments for duration up to 3 years. The level of funding is dependent on the described necessary budget to fulfil the project aims.
Foreign partners can be integrated in project consortia; they are not eligible for funding.
59 project proposals were submitted on 24/25 January 2007, 11 were selected for funding. Most projects started in autumn 2007 and will be finished in 2010. An initiative for an accompanying, cross-project research project was planned in April 2008.
